About This Quote

When I was a child, I had to listen to my parents lecture me on the importance of listening to music. They had an obsession with their music, but I didn't care. It was boring to me. I didn't understand why they were so passionate about music.

As time went on, they bought me more and more music, but I still didn't care. Even when they bought me their entire record collection, I still didn't care. But they did keep pushing it on me, and after a while I realized what they meant by listening to the radio all the time. When my parents would ask me what kind of music I like, they never asked me for my opinion.

They always wanted my opinion on their music collection, but never their own opinions about what kind of music I like. They decided for me what kind of music I liked based on my parents' opinions of it. My parents kept telling me that the only type of music that is worth listening to is what they like, but they never listened to anything themselves! After a while, I stopped listening to their music and listened only to the radio because it was all I could find in the house without my parents finding out.

Nowadays, my parents still try to get their opinions in when it comes to what kind of music I like or don't like. And when this happens, they tell me that if I liked their collection better than the radio then maybe I should consider buying it again. I learned from this that you can’t let your parents decide whether or not you will like something just because you don’t agree with them. Even when your parents keep trying to get you into a specific type of music that doesn’t suit you at all, you must find other things that do suit you better and listen to those instead.
